Turning 65? Your Medicare Enrollment Checklist

Turning 65 is an important milestone, and it's also when many Americans become eligible for Medicare. Understanding what steps to take can help you avoid costly penalties and ensure your coverage begins on time.

Step 1: Know Your Enrollment Window

Your Initial Enrollment Period lasts seven months:

• 3 months before your 65th birthday month
• Your birthday month
• 3 months after your birthday month

Missing this window could result in penalties or delayed coverage.

Step 2: Determine Whether You Need Part B

If you're still working and covered under a large employer health plan, you may be able to delay Medicare Part B.

If you're retiring or losing employer coverage, you'll likely need to enroll in Part B.

Step 3: Decide How You Want to Receive Medicare Coverage

Most beneficiaries choose one of two paths:

Option A: Original Medicare + Supplement

Benefits include:

• Freedom to see any Medicare provider nationwide
• Predictable out-of-pocket costs
• Additional protection from medical expenses

Option B: Medicare Advantage

Benefits may include:

• Prescription drug coverage
• Dental benefits
• Vision benefits
• Hearing benefits

Step 4: Review Prescription Drug Coverage

Even if you don't take medications today, reviewing prescription coverage is important to avoid future penalties.

Step 5: Get Expert Guidance

Medicare can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to navigate it alone.

At The Insurance Workshop, we help individuals turning 65 understand their options and enroll with confidence.
